Friend and famous garden photographer Allan Mandell visited us in Langley last week. Allan, who is living in Victoria these days, was on Whidbey Island for a photo shoot and stopped by for an evening kayak and an early morning photo shoot in my garden. Here's Allan, camera and tripod squeezed in amongst the lilies and hydrangeas:
Allan is as much fine art photographer as garden journalist these days with a recent show at a Victoria gallery (check out this article from the Times-Colonist for a photo gallery and description of the show). His work is large, sensuous, and stirs the spirit by evoking how we feel when we're in the garden. Here's Allan at the Luz Gallery in downtown Victoria during his show, plus a couple more images from the show:
Allan was the photographer on my first book, "Artists In Their Gardens", and we had a blast working together. Allan and I are exploring future collaborations; stay tuned. In the meantime, consider traveling with Allan to Japan this autumn. He's leading a photo trip for Pacific
Horticulture magazine; Allan's lived in Japan and traveled and
photographed gardens there for years so it should be an amazing experience.. click on the magazine's name,
above, for details about the trip.

Love Allan's work and the pix of him in your garden, Val.
