Flower and Garden Show week is upon us, and weather willing (Cliff Mass is now calling the snow predictions a "snow mirage") I hope to see you at my panel talk at 2:30 on Wednesday in the Rainier Room, where we'll be having fun with the topic of "What's Happening Now, What's Happening Next". Actually, I think it's called "The Future of Gardening" but my fellow panelists Dick Turner, Cole Burrell, moderator Lucy Hardiman and I plan to talk about the present as well as crystal ball the future...
I'll post a sneek peak of the display gardens tomorrow afternoon after I get home from judging for Pacific Horticulture magazine...and more reviews of the Marketplace and other thumbs up and thumbs down through the week here on Plant Talk. In the meantime, here are a few suggestions on what is not to miss, based on more-years-than-I-care-to-remember experience with the show:
DIG Nursery's booth is always a highlight, for Sylvia and Ross's fresh and colorful design as well as all the temptations they have for sale. The container displays on the skybridge always have good ideas at a reasonable, translatable scale. Since a new gate for my garden is on my wish list, I'm looking forward to the one-of-a-kind handcrafted gates by Northwest artists on display in the Plant Market.
Speaking of the Plant Market...if you get overwhelmed by all those plant possibilities, as I do, be sure and keep your head long enough to find Kelly and Sue at Far Reaches Farm, Eidelwess Perennials from Oregon, and B&D Lilies...I'm sure there are many more great offerings, but these three are uniquely, mouth-wateringly fabulous. Be sure and stop by the Seattle Times booth to meet my editors - the paper has teamed up with the Great Plant Picks program again this year, so you can pick up a gorgeous color poster and chat with the GPP experts at the same time.
Botanical artist Jean Emmons no longer has a booth at the show, but you can buy her Northwest Woodland Wildflower Posters at the bargain price of $11.00. Poster sherpa Timothy Coleman is having a close-out sale on his beautiful Good Nature Publishing posters - look for him in the North Hall, Booth Space #2453....also on sale is Native Wildflowers by John T. Pitcher, below
Tune in for an almost-from-the-floor (no, I won't be Tweeting) review of the display gardens here tomorrow afternoon....
