For a very few weeks in mid-summer when the lilies and hydrangeas are in bloom at the same time, even a garden as small as mine produces enough flowers and foliage to fill a large vase with the essence of summer.
I cut the deep violet buddleia from a neighbor's plant hanging obliginging through the hedge; the autumn-colored sunflowers grow in a pot in the hottest spot in my driveway, the Asiatic lilies are sadly unscented but so beautiful with their big, freckled orange blossoms. The vase is a big, dark ceramic one that looks like wood - heavy enough to securely hold a bouquet this large and spreading...
The yellow flowers are the just-opening buds of ligularia, the peach flowers are Peruvian lilies, and the little purple bells are Clematis 'Roguchi', oh, and there are a few spikes of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' in there to heat up the mix, with some pale lacecap Hydrangea 'Blue Wave' to mitigate between the hot colors...all the intensity of summer sun and warmth in a vase...
