I really should have been pruning roses and hydrangeas today - or weeding and mulching - or some other urgent spring task.
Instead, I channeled the creativity of Portlanders Nancy Goldman and Francoise Weeks (more on her inspired floristry in an upcoming column in Pacific Northwest magazine) and planted up some spike heels.
Museo Gallery here in Langley has an annual garden art show which this year features fantastical metal cages, banners and benches, all kinds of practical and beautiful pieces. And a bevy of high-heeled planters.(More details to come on the show and the opening party in a future post...)
What could be more fun than turning old heels, scavenged at Good Cheer, into planters? Believe it or not, the shoes hold up for several years (if you drill enough holes in the soles so that they drain well). And they rarely need watering anyway if you use drought-tolerant plants like the sedum, thyme, saxifrage and sempervivum in these wicked open-toe green stilettos....
Still to plant up are black spikes, white satin, jewel-encrusted pumps, some patent leather stilettos and an amazing pair of hot orange size 10 heels...I figure the weeds and tattered grasses, the overgrown roses and stick-like hydrangeas will all be there waiting for me next time I get out in the garden...

Love these little high heels! wish all these events weren't so far away.....I live in the South Sound. We have about 4 inches of snow on the ground still. (Foothills). Pining for spring! Can't even get out and prune!
