Didn't Ann Lovejoy once describe flowering plums as looking like liver colored lumps? My mother had a blireiana, until it was overtaken by it's under stock, and they will always put me in mind of Easter and their scent reminds me of the frankincense burned in church. I inherited a purple leaved plum when we bought our house and as I've started to landscape that part of the property I struggled with finding neighbors for it that make it look like part of a community and not so odd and lonely. When I cast my mind over the choices I've made for foliage and flowers, I realize I'm making a slightly muted and diffuse version of the bright, bold gardens you talked about in another post. Hmmm, maybe try a bit more red and orange this year and see how it goes.
