After months of doing my best to make do with evergreens, berries, and branches from the garden, I cracked. Isn't this weather about as bleak, windy, cold and gray as it gets? No wonder I crave color! Color deprivation, especially for gardeners, is as common this time of year as Seasonal Affective Disorder, and just as debilitating. When the natural world visually narrows down to gray, brown and green, a blast of color is the antidote.
After disciplining myself to pass by the New Year lilies - which wasn't that hard because the white ones looked unfortunately waxy, like Easter lilies, and the colored ones were just too overblown to consider - It was a bouquet of hot pink, orange and yellow roses at Whole Foods that made me cave.....piling them loosely into a low, green bowl was so satisfying, especially because they came mixed with chartreuse hypericum berries...
So I figured I may as well play up the color for a family dinner with a green runner & plaid napkins to get as much traction for my flower dollar as I can. Next week, I'll again be floating white Helleborus niger in a bowl and clipping Camellia sasanqua branches and rosemary twigs. But for now, a brief break from the winter garden is just the jolt my color-deprived senses were craving...

Wowza!! Now that's some color!...I almost had to get my sunglasses on...haven't seen that much popping, color in soooo long!! Very pretty!!
